It is a huge palace, mysterious and romantic castle. Its facade is constructed with local limestone. Its history is divided into 3 periods after the architects who worked on the palace: Rinaldi (Rococo and early classicism), Vincenzo Brenna (changed interiors into ceremonial rooms) and Roman Kuzmin. In 1756 the estate was given to Count Grigory Orlov, a favourite of Catherine II. In 1766 Antonio Rinaldi started the construction of a palatial building. At the Same time the first landscape garden in Russia was being laid out around the palace.
The Birch Pavilion is one of a few structures in the Palace Park. This wooden cottage standing on a hilltop has a semblance of stacked firewood, inside is a well appointed room with mirrors, pictures, sofas. It was built by Maria Fedorovna to surprise Paul I. The Masking portal was built to hide the Birch Pavilion and to increase the effect of surprise
The Venus Pavilion was erected in It was devoted to Venus, the goddess of love. The waters of the White Lake Wash three sides of this pavilion. It is located on the Island of Love. The open water space of the Pavilion was used for such scenes as ship parades, theatricals and fireworks.
The obelisk Connetable Served as a pointer for a huge sun-dial. It was the highest monument in Europe (32m) at that time. The idea of the obelisk was brought from France
The Priorate Palace dates to the peak period of construction work at Gatchina. It was intended as a Residence for the Prior of the Maltese Order. However, the Priorate Palace was never used for that purpose. The architect Nikolai Lvov completed this palace in 1797 making use of earth as an out-of-the-ordinary construction material. This palace is the first and sole monumental adobe structure in Russia
It is the house of the famous cartoonist Paul Shcherbov. It was made by architect Krichinsky in the north modern style. There were literature meetings with Shcherbovs friends and concerts at this house and concerts at this house.
Sobornaya street is the most popular street in our town. It is the street, where all the celebrations and holidays take place. It is also famous for its cathedral – St. Pauls sobor. It is a beautiful building.
The building of russian airplanes was very slow because of The shortage of money. The representatives of russian government considered that it was easier to buy planes abroad and they agreed with France about it they promised to build the aerodrome in our country. It was decided to build it on a military field in Gatchina. The building began in April It was also a military flying Balloon school. Nowadays there is a monument to the old russian plane.
