Selection of 18 habitat types Overview of the pre-scoping document Boreal Natura 2000 Workshop 25.-26.1.2012, Helsinki Marita Arvela, European Topic Center on Biological Diversity
DATA & METHOD USED Article 17 data of 2001-2006 (EU25) Excluded: species listed in Annex V only Boreal region: 88 habitat types and 160 species covered birds data not in the analysis Clustering of habitat types and species so called “Baseline grouping” used as a basis to produce adjusted habitat grouping for Boreal region some habitat types & species may appear in 2 different groups
Proposed habitat groups Coastal Freshwater Forests Grasslands & Heaths Marine Rocks Scrub Wetlands
How the results were calculated? 1. Criteria for prioritization Number of MS where species/habitat types are present (criterion A) Species and habitat types at unfavourable conservation status (criterion B) Negative trend using certain parameters (criterion C) 2. Filtering species and habitat types: - priority index calculated using A(B + C) for each species and habitat type
Test to use weighting (tested for the Pilot Boreal Seminar) Tested for conclusions of unfavourable conservation status (criterion B) & trend information (criterion C) No major changes in results, but potential constraints detected
Habitat types selected by the Steering group
proposed to be linked to habitat types Annex II/IV species & Annex I birds proposed to be linked to habitat types Table continues…
OTHER SUPPORTING ELEMENTS Positive trend for “area of habitat”, “structure & functions” AND “population” and “habitat for species” (max 10 points/species or habitat) N2K coverage indicates how many % of habitat area/species distribution are in SCIS. = 0-50, = 51-75, =76-100
