CILIP Privacy Project Policy, CILIP August 2017 CILIP is the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professional (CILIP). We represent information, library and knowledge management professionals working across the public, private and 3rd sectors. This presentation provides an overview of some of the key trends and changes impacting on the school libraries sector. It refers to wider trends for in teaching and learning and the role which librarians can play in supporting the school in delivering educational excellence for every child. Setting the Context: Why privacy? Privacy and confidentiality are fundamental to CILIP’s Code of Ethics Respondents to Shape the future put Privacy in the top 10 priority policy agendas for CILIP to address during the lifetime of the Action Plan (2016-2020)   Our user privacy guidelines are old and they do not cover the role of CILIP members in ensuring a compliant and ethical approach to the management of information within the commercial sector The concept and practice of online data privacy are undergoing rapid change and challenge from the private sector and the state

But... Our profession has not seen a corresponding change in its practices There has been little debate about possible conflict of interests between providers of services and users/ consumers of those services Information professionals have to a certain extent been bypassed in the design and implementation of systems which collect personal information of the user

Purpose of the Privacy project To find out how CILIP can best support and advise information and library workers, managers and leaders so that they can:  Ensure that the privacy of the personal data of users is protected Support users and citizens in understanding the issues, trade-offs and risks concerning privacy and personal data to enable individuals to make informed and effective decisions about their data and effectively manage it in an online environment ensure a compliant and ethically sound approach to the management of information in companies and the public sector

Practical outcomes Sustainable for five years: Advice to the Ethics Review in regard to privacy and freedom of access to information A user guide/s on privacy for information and library practitioners across all sectors A policy statement and an Information Rights Charter

How we will achieve this A consultation discussion document which sets out the key issues to be addressed and asks questions of key individuals and sector bodies A survey of CILIP membership Privacy workshops in the devolved nations (& England?) Telephone interviews with a selected group of experts Incorporation of the findings from Carnegie UK Trust’s project Privacy and public benefit (public library focused)
