HORMONES Definition-to exite or set in motion Work with nervous system to stimulate bodily activities (fight or flight) Responsible for changes in bone development, reproductive organs, and secondary sex characteristics Regulate the body’s metabolism

PITUITARY GLAND Definition-gland that controls much of the endocrine system/starts the onset of puberty Located at the base of the brain Releases growth hormone Also secretes two other gonadotropic hormones, LH and FSH Which help develop the gonads of the male/female

TERMS Gonads Testosterone Estrogen and Progesterone The reproductive organs of either the male (testes) or the female (ovaries) Testosterone Male sex hormone Produced by the testes Estrogen and Progesterone Female sex hormones Produced by the ovaries

TERMS (cont.) Sperm Testicles Egg Ovaries Male sex cell Male sex glands Egg Female sex cell Ovaries Female sex glands Secondary Sex Characteristics The physical changes that occur during puberty

SECONDARY SEX CHARACTERISTICS MALES Broadened shoulders Facial, underarm, and pubic hair Deepened voice Increased muscular development Longer and larger bones FEMALES Breast development Underarm and pubic hair Widened hips
