Mining Literature What is insight? What is the importance of complexity in literature? Think about the play, Othello. Give some examples of small details that you noticed about one of the characters. Then, apply your powers of insight to come to some conclusions about that character’s motivations based on those clues.

Now, think of the main struggle that your character goes through as the story progresses. What different social forces contribute to the complicated situation that the character is in? Describe these forces (they may be large or small, internal or external), discussing the way that they push or pull on the character’s choices and actions. Character Details/Observations Conclusions about Character’s Motivations Main Struggle Social Forces and the Impact

Thematic concepts – Focus on Acts III & IV MODEL – whole group (process below) Brainstorm whole group: Thematic Concepts With your group, select 2 to focus on For each thematic concept: Write 3-5 sentences about this topic – a ‘free write’ of ideas, thoughts, and questions as it relates to the play/characters, etc. Answer the question with multiple options: What have we learned about ______________ (thematic concept) in Acts III & IV? (Make a bulleted list) Identify textual evidence (quotes!) that address the topic/concept (at least 6 quotes) – try to focus on Acts III & IV For each quote, identify what is revealed, suggested, shown, etc. in terms of the theme?
