CHINA’S RIVER VALLEYS 5-1

GEOGRAPHY Geographic barriers (i.e., mountains, oceans, & deserts) isolated China from other major civilizations. Chinese called themselves “Middle Kingdom” Thought they were the center of the world

GEOGRAPHY North China Plain built up by soil deposits of the Huang River Dry climate

GEOGRAPHY Monsoons in southern China make the area warm and wet.

GEOGRAPHY Civilizations in China grew up along the Huang & Chang rivers.

GEOGRAPHY Huang River (Yellow River) Muddiest river in the world Loess soil called “China’s Sorrow” because of devastating floods 1931- 3.7 million killed 1039- 500,000 killed

GEOGRAPHY Chang River - (Yangtze River) Longest river in China

GEOGRAPHY The rivers provide good soil for farming, but also bring floods. Early people built dikes to hold back the flood waters.
