Chapter 3 – Inside the Atom Section 1 Models of the Atom

I. Chemistry: The study of matter, what it is made of, and the changes it goes through. A. Greek philosophers devised a theory of ATOMS, or tiny PARTICLES

ELEMENTS: matter made of atoms of only ONE kind.

B. John DALTON combined the idea of ELEMENTS with the Greek theory of the atom. !!!Yes, another funky Scientist in the hizous!!!

Dalton’s thinking… Matter is made up of ATOMS Atoms CANNOT be divided into smaller pieces. All atoms of an element are exactly ALIKE Different elements are made of DIFFERENT atoms

Dalton’s ATOM MODEL Dalton thought atoms were hard SPHERES that were the same throughout, like a MARBLE

Dalton’s thinking… 5. Dalton’s theory was tested by William CROOKE and his CATHODE-RAY tube experiment

Dalton’s model was NOT changed…yet. See page 66 in your textbook!
