Visionary Leadership in a Changing Landscape Some concepts and tools to help change the world.

Management = making things happen Leadership = knowing what needs to happen Can be governance, management, at any level of an agency, organizational or individual, or a combination. Sets Vision and Direction Provides a Path – a Way to Achieve the Direction Keeps the “Plot” - Keeps People “On Course” Uses Judgment to Make Strategic Decisions Inspires and Motivates Others

Vision/Purpose What is it that we are fundamentally here for? Forward Looking – shapes the future and propels us into it Honors the Past – Is Anchored in the Present - Shapes the Future Visionary Leadership Is highly aware of the Environment and Proactively responds to it in order to Shape the Future.

Purpose/Vision Ask Why 3 Times State what the vision or purpose of your work with older people is Ask yourself WHY? (is this your vision) Restate your vision or purpose in light of your answer Ask yourself WHY again Repeat the process one more time.

Was there a deeper purpose/ vision? Was there an under-laying driver? What is really going on for older people? What is really going on? What is really motivating you?

From Environment to Strategy What SWOT do these things throw up in relation to your achieving your vision/ purpose for older people? Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats How can you use strengths to capture opportunities minimize weaknesses and mitigate threats?

Keeping the Plot The Strategic Agenda A leader does not let the urgent get in the way of addressing the important. What are the Five Things you need to work on this month to advance your vision and strategy? Make sure they get most of your time. If you can’t your organization may not be resources to allow effective leadership.
