Elements  Of Mice and men

Definitions  Diction: the choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing. Tone: the general character or attitude of a place, piece of writing, situation, etc. Style: Style is the way in which something is written, as opposed to the meaning of what is written. Jargon: special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand.

Diction Use of the N-Word Page 81, '"Well, you keep your place then, ******."' This shows the disrespect that that white characters have towards Crooks Only referring to Curley's wife as "Curley's wife" Page 95, "George stared at Curley's wife."  Demeans her because she is a woman; even in death she does not get a name Use of farming jargon  Page 23, "Big tall skinner." A skinner is a person who skins or prepares animal skin

Tone  Calm        "Although there was evening brightness showing through the windows of the bunkhouse, inside it was dusk" (Steinback 38). Sympathetic "I turns to Lennie and says, ‘Jump in.’ An’ he jumps. Couldn’t swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him. An’ he was so damn nice to me for pullin’ him out. Clean forgot I told him to jump in. Well, I ain’t done nothing like that no more” (Steinback 40).

Style Simple and Peaceful "The water is warm too … the water is lined with trees-willows fresh and green with every spring … Rabbits come out of the brush to sit on the sand in the evening" (Steinbeck 1). " She was very pretty and simple, and her face was sweet and young. Now her rouged cheeks and reddened lips made her seem alive and sleeping very lightly" (Steinbeck 93).

THEMES In order to maintain a friendship, there has to be sacrifices To achieve peace, you must do what is right not what is easy
