Caused By… Bad weather/poor crops/starvation Began to question the forced taxation Questioned the ability of the government to overcome difficulty

Resulted in… Support for Bafuku weakened Many Samurai began to support the emperor instead of the Bafuku

What did the people want? Wanted to create a new government headed by the emperor

How did they attempt to get it? By increasing military armaments, purchasing weapons and ships from the west Even some women broke tradition and formed military brigades to fight the Shogun’s troops

Meiji’s first move What would yours be?

He ordered the Tokugawa family to surrender their ancestral land He abolished the office of the Shogun, which means he made it so that there was no such thing as shoguns anymore, they had no power since they had no position over people.
