SOL Tests and Dates 2018 Reading SOL – Part 1 – May 2 AM Science SOL – May 9 PM Math SOL- Part 1- May 16 AM Part 2- May 17 PM

SOL Boot Camp Dates Subject to Change BEFORE school from     7:45- 8:45 a.m. Dates: Girls-April 1,2,8,9,29,30 Boys-April 4,5,11,12,May 2,3

SOL Test Scores VA SOL scores measure how well students have mastered grade-specific skills, and report achievement in each subject using the following three levels: 1. Advanced 2. Proficient 3. Fail

SOL Test Scores The number of questions on each SOL range from approximately 39-60. The passing scores for each test are on a reporting scale that ranges from 0 to 600. A scaled score of 0 to 399 means a student Did Not Pass . Students who fail MAY be eligible to retake the test. A scaled score of 400 to 499 means a student Passed a test and was classified as Proficient. A scaled score of 500 to 600 means a student Passed a test and was classified as Advanced.

SOL Test Format The SOL format for MATH AND READING has changed since 2017. These tests will be Computer Adaptive Tests. Video describing CAT The Science test has not changed in format for 2017. Science test includes material from Fourth and Fifth Grade!!

Science SOL What to expect . . . .

What is the Science SOL? The Science SOL is a comprehensive test of your child’s K-5 Science education – with particular focus on standards learned in 4th grade and 5th grade Science The Science SOL consist of 50 questions The test consists of TEI questions – your child will have to move the information on the screen.

Science Vocabulary Importance of vocabulary Your child will need to know, understand, and apply 300 Science vocabulary words and Science concepts that they learned in 4th and 5th grade. Students are provided Science Study Guides with the vocabulary and need to review the words and concept daily. SCIENCE REFRIGERATOR CARDS Science Vocabulary

Use the vocabulary from the study guide to create flashcards with your student and quiz them. Ask your child questions about what they learned today. Ask them to explain the Science concepts they learn. Ask your child good Science questions. How parents can help?

Questions to ask to reinforce the Science concepts Ask your child questions like: “What is that cloud in the sky called?” Is this plant vascular or non-vascular? What phase is the moon in? Can you name the 4 terrestrial planets? Can you name the 4 planets that are Gas Giants? What is the largest planet in our Solar System? Can you name the 8 planets orbiting the Sun?
