Chapter 4.1- Work & Power. What is Work?  For work to occur two things must happen:  Work is done when an object moves in the same direction in which.
Work done is the energy transferred when a force moves an object over a distance. Since work is energy transferred, the unit for work is the joule (J).

Warm up Draw the 3 different types of levers.

What is work? Work is equal to the force applied times the distance the over which the force is applied.

How is the amount of work measured? When you push a box with a force of 1N a distance of one meter, you have accomplished 1joule of work. What is a joule? 1 joule = 1 N·m

How are force and distance related in machines? In a simple machine the work input is always equal to or greater than the work output. In order to produce a large output force with a small input force the input force is applied over a longer distance

What is efficiency? Efficiency is the ratio of work output to work input. Efficiency = Wo/Wi In real machines work output is always less than work input due to friction.

The rate work is done is called power. Power is work (joules) ÷ time (seconds) P=W/t The Unit for power is watt. 1watt = 1 joule/second
