American Government Sept. 29th BTEOTLIWBAT Opener (p24) Show understanding of a key issue and the liberal and conservative viewpoints by developing a convincing argument and rebuttal Channel One

Debate Prep pg 25 Read your information Decide which 2 members of your group are Pro or Con, Which is the Liberal viewpoint and which is the Conservative viewpoint (this may not reflect actual candidate views) Create a Pro/Con/Rebuttal/Question Chart for YOUR SIDE based on the reading Do the research to complete the chart.

Pro Con Rebuttal Questions Why should the voters support your side? What are some drawback or negatives about your side? This is what the opposing side will criticize you on. How will you respond to criticism from the other side? What criticism or questions do you have for the other side?

Debate Prep separate sheet of paper Main argument (why is your side right?) Supporting arguments (why is the other side wrong?) Must have at least 2 different reasons why the other side is wrong, and how your side makes sense. Be sure to address the rebuttals you may have! The other side might explain how exactly you are wrong – be sure you have a response for that  How will debate go? I will ask each side to give their main argument. You will then be allowed to rebut the other side’s main argument (address why they are wrong) Then I will open the floor for debate. You are free to ask the other side questions (why do you believe this, how can you support _____, etc), go further to prove your point. If I have to ask the audience for questions for either side, you are not doing your job as members of the debate! Make it a good show. You are to speak to the other side during debates – remember, your goal is to convince the audience that you are correct! If YOU are talking, and you are not part of the debate, YOU will be docked points on your debate! Total debate time will be between 7-10 minutes each. You WILL be timed.

Debate will be graded on the following Content 60% Does it make sense and is it accurate information? Did you clearly explain your issue and is it obvious which side you are on? Performance 40% Audibility- can I hear and understand you? Organization- does it make sense? Do you respond appropriately to your opponent? Use of time- do you share equal time talking as your partner. Less credit for talking too much or too little Persuasiveness- do you use facts and quotes as well as emotion to persuade your audience? Address your classmates, not your opponent or teacher
