Absolutism - Revolution American Revolution Absolutism - Revolution

English Traditions Magna Carta- established: Monarch had to obey the law English Civil War: government reforms were introduced after the king was executed Glorious Revolution: bloodless revolution, King James II was limited by parliament to change religion , William & Mary become rulers English Bill of Rights: W&M agree to limits in power that the parliament demanded Principle of Limited Governement

What do you call yourself? People that moved from England in Europe across the Atlantic to North America to claim land for England would be called????? So What country do they answer to? OR Who are they subjects of... Explain in the second box of your flow chart. Students need to understand that part of the reason that English revolution ideas spread was that English Men came to settle in North America and these are not Americans YET but rather ENGLISH men and women living in English colonies

Early English Colonist Puritans (Pilgrims), Quakers, Catholics escape religious persecution in England  and establish colonies such as Plymouth … Mercantilism - Find sources of cheap raw materials and create a place to sell British products. $$$ Make money growing cash crops in places such as Jamestown (Ex. tobacco, cotton, rice, indigo, sugarcane) $$$ Since the founding of Jamestown English Colonist in North America had been subjects of Great Britain ...thus they should be entitled to all the rights that English men gained – Magna Carta, English Bill of Rights

England Asserts Power French & Indian War Global war between France and England Fighting in the colonies extremely expensive France looses and England takes over her colonies Fighting with Native Americans English colonists constantly struggle with Native American tribes in the west. Colonists were settling on land owned by the tribes and this constantly caused wars.

England Asserts Power continued The Proclamation of 1763 - Law passed in England that prohibits any English settlement west of the Appalachian mountains Britain stationed troops in the colonies in order to enforce the Proclamation of 1763. Britain has a huge debt to pay because of the French & Indian war. English Parliament decides the colonies should help English citizens pay. How did the proclamation of 1763 allow England to assert power over the colonist?

Why do governments need taxes???

Taxes continued The British government had run up a large debt during the war. Parliament began to passed and enforce laws on the long neglected colonies by introducing several new taxes on items to help pay off the war debt and the salaries of the soldiers stationed in the colonies. Stamp Act – required colonist to pay a tax on all paper goods Tea Act- Tax was placed on all tea, a popular English colonist drink Sugar Act- Tax placed on sugar Based on the example above and your class discussion Explain Why the British government needed taxes? Were they justified in demanding the colonist to pay? Turn and talk

Response to Taxation Colonist response- To protest the tax on tea, a group of men in Indian disguises, boarded British ships and dumped 12million dollars worth of tea into the harbor; Boston Tea Party. Colonist Resented what they felt was “taxation without representation” they protested because they had no representation in the English Parliament even though they were English Colonist. (remember... what country do you claim) British Response- The Intolerable Acts were passed as a means of punishment for the actions of the colonist protest of the Tea Act. Some example of the punishments include... closing the port in Boston, Massachusetts colony could no longer make their own colonial laws ,

Enlightenment Enlightenment Magna Carta: King vs Noblemen Glorious revolution: King vs_ Parliament American Revolution: King/ Parliament vs _____ If the people have power what principle of government is this an example of? Explain what Enlightenment has done to the kings power? Enlightenment The People Based on your discussion lead students to understand that the ideas of popular sovereignty began to appear in the American Colonies. This principle term should be included in their answer in the flow chart box.

Thinkers John Locke- Enlightenment thinker made the colonist think it was unjust for the government to tax with out considering their views Voltaire- thinker that spoke about allowing people to profess religion in their own ways. He also spoke out for the right of free speech. (constitutional principle of individual rights) Thomas Paine- An English colonist that published pamphlet , Common Sense, applying the enlightenment idea of reason to the disputes between colonist and England. (constitutional principle of popular sovereignty) Principle of individual rights

Revolution Colonist sent their own representatives to a meeting in Philadelphia to discuss the growing problems with England; Continental Congress. It was here that colonist influenced by protest, enlightenment ideas and unjust treatment by the King decided to declare independence , thus creating a change, by assigning Thomas Jefferson to write a formal letter to King George freeing the colonies of British Rule and forming the United States of America in 1776 a democratic Republic. Explain How this is an Example of Revolution ?
