Bipolar Disorder A disruptive, long term condition with mood swings Depressed (lows): feel sad or hopeless and lose interest in most activities Manic (highs): feel euphoric and full of energy Mood shifts range from only a few times a year to several times a day Some cases depression and mania at the same time

Forms of Treatment Moods can be kept in check by following a treatment plan Most cases, bipolar disorder can be controlled with medications and psychological counseling Other therapies: Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychoeducation, Family therapy, Group Therapy, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) In some cases, people with bipolar disorder benefit from hospitalization

Gestalt Therapy Focus on the here and now, direct experiencing, awareness and bringing unfinished business from the past into the present

Gestalt Theory The goal is attaining awareness and expanding choices. Awareness includes knowing environment and knowing oneself, accepting oneself, and being able to make contact with other people

Key themes to remember for Gestalt theory The power is in the present   To be fully aware is to live in the “here and now”

From the movie clips what would you say Pat’s personality is like?

Pat identities his own unfinished business from the past that is interfering with his present functioning by re- experiencing past situations as though they were happening at the present moment.
