Engineering Design Process Lesson Goals: Learn how to use the EDP Work collaboratively as a team to complete the task Gain appreciation of Engineering design

Task Using only the materials provided – You must design and build the tallest tower which is strong enough to balance a marshmallow on its top. There is a prize for the tallest tower built. You have 30 minutes to work as a team and apply the EDP. You may look at other groups but you should not discuss design with other groups.

Before you begin… An effective team has members who each play a certain role: 1. Scientist – in charge of recording data and monitor repeatability. 2. Engineer – Monitor the project constraints, approves the final design, oversee materials. 3. Logistics – Collect & return equipment, keeps track of time. 4. Project manager – manages group discussions & team, Check safety, direct work and can is the ONLY one that can ask teacher questions.

Questions to Consider….. 1. What did you contribute to your team? 2. What do you think engineers have to consider when they suggest which materials would be best for a certain structure? 3. What forces cause the tower to tip over? 4. What features of the design helped your tower to reach new heights? 5. After testing what changes did you make to your tower? 6. Engineers early ideas rarely work out perfectly, How does testing help improve your design? 7. What did you learn from watching others?
