Hinduism Aryan religion evolved into this Both a religion and way of life Belief in reincarnation Body dies Soul lives Reborn after death

Hinduism cont. Karma: actions in a person’s life, now and previously, that will determine their destiny The good are rewarded The bad are punished If good you are born into higher state Bad, born into lower state Goal is to reach perfection

Hindu Beliefs (The Guru)

Nataraja (King of Dance) Portrays SHIVA 3rd Eye- called Bindi or Tilaka. Tilaka differ depending on the sect or god that is worshipped. Bindi is only for women, usually to represent marriage. Four arms for the four directions, balance of good over evil and over ignorance. Expression and hairdo represent the holiness of Ganga or Ganges river.

Hinduism cont. Perfection is called “moksha” and the cycle of reincarnation stops United with Brahma (source of all being) Brahma has 3 forms Brahma (creator or source) Vishnu (protector of all things) Shiva (god of destruction)

Buddhism Created by Prince Siddhartha Gautama Type of reformed Hinduism Wanted simpler more pure religion Became educated on Vedas & Upanishads Became known as the “enlightened one” or Buddha

Buddhism cont. Shared beliefs w/ Hinduism No killing animals Reincarnation Buddhism’s state of perfection is called nirvana Rejected Hindu scriptures, caste system, and rituals All people could achieve nirvana
