Functions Collects carbon dioxide and exhales it out of the body. Collects oxygen and sends it throughout the body in our blood. The oxygen keeps you alive!
Oxygen Cycle
Different Components Nose - Air moves through the nose. Pharynx - A passageway for both air and food. Larynx - Air moves through the larynx. Trachea - Also called the windpipe. Bronchi - Large passageways into the lungs. Lungs - The convert gases and produce oxygen.
Tissue makeup Pleura: double layered serous membranes on each lung Epithelium: (squamous and cilious) are two different types of muscle tissue in the lungs Alveoli: exchanges gasses inside the lungs
Diseases of the Lungs Asthma: The inflammation of the airways, causes wheezing and shortness of breath. COPD: Inability to exhale normally, making it hard to breathe. Lung cancer: Caused by smoking and mutations in the DNA, can cause death if not found soon enough. Cystic Fibrosis: A genetic condition that causes buildup of mucus in the bronchi. Black Lung: Lungs turn black after extended exposure to smoking.
