Presentation transcript:

Week 1 September 20th, 2017

What is Model UN? Model UN is a collaborative activity where students delve deeper into international relations through a United Nations simulation. Students represent different countries and solve real world issues based on the policy of their country. Objectives: To pass a resolution in your committee To reach consensus To convey your country’s policies

Conferences Our team will be assigned countries, and each delegate in MUN committee also has a corresponding delegate in a UN committee. Most conferences try to stay as accurate as possible to real life Sometimes delegates will represent a country in a committee in pairs. Each committee generally has two topics Ex. “Yemen Food Crisis” and “The Emergence of Cyber Warfare”

Wait! What are Committees? 2. Specialized Committees Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) & Regional Bodies UNHCR: Higher Commission on Refugees UNODC: Office on Drugs and Crime United Nations Office on Outer Space Affairs European Union International Monetary Fund (IMF) 3. Crisis Committee Historical Alternative Universe Fantasy General Assemblies Largest Committees, pass non-binding resolutions Includes: DISEC- Disarmament and International Security ECOFIN- Economic and Financial SOCHUM- Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee SPECPOL- Special Political and Decolonization Admin and Budget Legal

Five Steps of MUN Research Debate Negotiation Resolutions Action

Goal of Research: Country and Topic Before Research: Background Guide Research Binder (MUY IMPORTANTE) Country profile Terms/acronyms Previous resolutions/treaties on the topic Possible solutions Position Paper Each topic requires a position paper Can factor in for award points-depends on conference Times New Roman, pt 12

Position Paper Five Parts of a Position Paper Topic background Past international action Country policy: Most important point: apply SPEAR! Possible Solutions Sources

Speakers List A list that contains the order of speakers Delegates raise their placards if they want to speak and are added The Speaker’s List is the default format of debate So….how do I give a MUN speech? Hook: “Honorable Chair and Fellow Delegates” Be engaging! Point: Share your country policy! Action: Tell the audience exactly what they should do! End with a thank you

Moderated Caucus What’s the point of one? When motioning for one, you need: Total time of caucus Speech time Subtopic Example: The delegation of Egypt motions for a 10 minute moderated caucus with a speaking time of 30 seconds on the subtopic of CO2 emissions.

Unmoderated Debate Time to form blocs and write resolutions Meeting others Talk to the people who said things you agree with Walk around and introduce yourself! Handshake + name + country

Example of a Resolution: Resolution: Nuclear Security Sponsors: China, Hungary, India, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia. Signatories: Poland, Cuba, Algeria, the United Kingdom, Brazil, France, Sudan. Recognizing the impracticality and inefficiency in demanding all countries to completely remove nuclear weapons, Remembering the past treaties past by the UN, including the Non-Proliferation Treaty signed in 1968, which has three main pillars: non- proliferation, disarmament, and peaceful use of energy,

Invites all Member States to create a diplomatic program called TNS (Trust in Nuclear Security) who, partnered with NGOs, will build confidence between all participating countries; Suggests the implementation of two peacebuilding programs called the Trust in Nuclear Security (TNS): one in the Middle East and one including India, China, and Pakistan; These programs should lead to nuclear free zones. These programs will begin in the year 2022; These plans will decrease political tensions and the possibility of mutually assured destruction (MAD) Why do you think the UN can only recommend action?

Action = VOTING Three options: Yes, No, or Abstain. At role call, a delegation can say one of two things: Present: You may or may not vote for a resolution at the end of the conference. You may abstain from voting Present and Voting: You will vote no matter what. You cannot abstain.
