Textual Studies From The Gospel Of Luke & The Acts Of The Apostles Two Treatises Textual Studies From The Gospel Of Luke & The Acts Of The Apostles

Lesson 27 – Holy Spirit Baptism 2:1-4 “They” are together on Pentecost v. 1 Pronoun must refer back to apostles cp. 1:26 Important to refute false teaching that more than the apostles received the Holy Spirit Peter took his stand “with the 11” v. 14 The Holy Spirit comes upon them vv. 2-4

Lesson 27 – Holy Spirit Baptism 2:1-4 The Holy Spirit comes upon them vv. 2-4 A “noise from heaven” of a mighty wind “Tongues of fire” lit upon each of the apostles The apostles began to fluently speak in other “tongues” (languages) cp. vv. 6, 8, 11 Not unintelligble “gibberish”

Lesson 27 – Holy Spirit Baptism 2:1-4 The Holy Spirit comes upon them vv. 2-4 The promise from the Father, as mentioned by Jesus, has now been fulfilled Jn 14:26 15:26 16:12-13 Acts 1:4-5, 8

Lesson 27 – The People React 2:5-13 Multitudes of Jews are in Jerusalem for Pentecost v. 5 cp. Ex 23:14-17 When the “sound” occurred, the people began to hear “these Galileans” speak in all the different & native dialects vv. 6-11

Cappadocia Pontus Parthians Medes Asia Phrygia Rome Elamites Pamphylia Judea Mesopotamia Crete Egypt Arabia Libya

Lesson 27 – The People React 2:5-13 Most were amazed, perplexed…they asked “What does all this mean?” v. 12 Some began to mock the apostles, accuse them of being drunk v. 13

Lesson 27 – 1st Sermon 2:14-36 Peter defends the apostles vv. 14-21 They were not drunk…it was too early for that It was a fulfillment of what the prophet Joel predicted some 860 years earlier vv. 16-21 “In the last days” cp. Heb 1:1-2 “All mankind” Ù every segment of society

Lesson 27 – 1st Sermon 2:14-36 It was a fulfillment of what the prophet Joel predicted some 860 years earlier vv. 16-21 “The day of the Lord” Ù a reference to judgment Isa 13:9-10 Ezek 32:7 Mt 24:29 “Whoever will call…can be saved” Ù God always desires man’s salvation 2 Pet 3:9

Lesson 27 – 1st Sermon 2:14-36 Peter’s actual preaching vv. 22-36 He begins by focusing on Jesus v. 22 A Man “attested” (proven) by God among the people by His signs & miracles they had seen They “delivered Him up” for death v. 23 Predetermined…foreknowledge of God Destroys premillennial doctrine

Lesson 27 – 1st Sermon 2:14-36 Peter’s actual preaching vv. 22-36 God “raised Him up” for life v. 24 He put an end to the agony of death Heb 2:14 Fulfilled David’s prophecy vv. 25-28 Quotation from Psa 16:8-11 Jesus was not “abandoned” to Hades Jesus was in Hades Ù Lk 23:43 Mt 16:18

Lesson 27 – 1st Sermon 2:14-36 Peter’s actual preaching vv. 22-36 David’s prophecy was re: Christ…not himself vv. 29-31 He is still dead, buried…tomb still occupied He “looked ahead” and spoke re: Christ, the “oath” God had made to him & his throne cp. 2 Sam 7:12 Psa 16

Lesson 27 – 1st Sermon 2:14-36 Peter’s actual preaching vv. 22-36 The apostles are witnesses of the resurrected Christ v. 32 Jesus is now the exalted King vv. 33-35 He has been enthroned He has sent what was promised…what the crowds were now seeing

Lesson 27 – 1st Sermon 2:14-36 Peter’s actual preaching vv. 22-36 The exhortation…Israel is to “know” the One they had murdered has been proven to be both Lord & Christ v. 36

Lesson 27 – The Response 2:37-42 The Jews were “cut to the heart” v. 37a Feeling the weight & guilt of their sin, they asked “What shall we do?” v. 37b Peter told them, “Repent & be baptized…in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…” v. 38

Lesson 27 – The Response 2:37-42 “For the remission of sins…” Phrase highly debated re: baptism’s necessity Many claim “for” means “because”…baptized because they were already saved by faith A look at Mt 26:28 helps us interpret correctly “Because” makes Jesus’ words meaningless

Lesson 27 – The Response 2:37-42 Peter mentions the “promise” v. 39 A reference to what God had always had in mind cp. Gen 12:3 Gal 3:10-14, 16-29 “…to you & your children” Ù Jews “…to those afar off” Ù Gentiles Eph 2:11-13 For those who are “called” 2 Thess 2:13-14

Lesson 27 – The Response 2:37-42 Peter continued to exhort, “Save yourselves from this generation” v. 40 cp. Phil 2:12b 3,000 obeyed the gospel v. 41 They continued on with “spiritual activities” v. 42

Lesson 27 – The 1st Saints 2:43-47 They had a “sense of awe” v. 43a A feeling of reverence, gratitude toward God They continued to observe the apostles working signs & wonders v. 43b They also developed a real “kindred spirit” toward each other, their needs vv. 44-45

Lesson 27 – The 1st Saints 2:43-47 They also developed a real “kindred spirit” toward each other, their needs vv. 44-46 They sold their possessions to provide for anyone who was needy They gladly & joyfully spent time together “spiritually” and “socially”

Lesson 27 – The 1st Saints 2:43-47 In all their actions, the early disciples “had favor with all the people” v. 47a The Lord continued to “…add to the church day by day those who were being saved” v. 47b
