Education is not the filling of a but the lighting of a -- W. B. Yeats pail fire
What’s going on in Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of matter, and we are still working on our first unit, “Introduction to Chemistry.” So far, in this unit, we have studied: The Math of Chemistry: Measurement systems – Metric system Significant Figures Precision and Accuracy Safety
Units coming up: Unit I Test – week of 9/15 Matter Atomic Structure Electron Arrangement The Periodic Table Bonding Nomenclature And then, second semester!
Math Content Chemistry is a math based subject More than half of our class periods will involve some type of math calculation Algebra skills are required for this class Students should bring a calculator every day I have basic function calculators
Textbook Modern Chemistry – please keep at home Will be distributed tomorrow
Homework Homework will be given most class periods May sometimes finish in class I may grade every problem or I may only select a few from the assignment. Homework should take approx. 20-30 min.
Homework & Classwork Policy… Follows Howard High’s policy… Students have one day to turn in late work for ½ credit. No credit for any work turned in past that time.
Lab Work Students must wear goggles in lab at all times and wear closed-toed shoes. Your student’s safety is my first priority when we work in lab.
Quizzes Generally, quizzes are announced ahead of time Studying for quizzes keeps students from “crash” studying the night before an exam
Grading 50% Assessments (exams, quizzes, projects) 30% Labwork 20% Homework/Classwork
Times available to meet… Before school and after school by appointment
Science For Next Year Before registration for next year, I will send home a recommendation for your child’s science class placement for the 2014-15 school year I highly recommend physics
