When watching any form of media, we need to remember that the SWAT codes are all carefully put in place to make the viewer come to the ‘preferred’ meaning. This means, what you watch is all chosen and put together to make you think what the creator wants you to think! LOOK OUT!

SWAT codes So what does SWAT stand for? Symbolic Written Audio Technical SWAT codes

Symbolic Symbols are used all around the world. They are in the form of logos or signs. Certain items, objects and colours can also be symbolic. Can you tell your partner what a symbol is and what is its purpose? Symbolic

TEAM WORK You have 20 seconds to get into three groups. Your group must find the symbols around the room and place them next to the correct meaning on your sheet. The first group finished AND correct will win a prize at the end of the lesson. TEAM WORK

Symbols can also be religious in nature, as can certain items of clothing. This helps people identify with their culture or show they are following certain rules to devote themselves to the religion. Symbols

Written codes Written codes are pretty simple to understand. It is the placement of words into the scene. The font used and the choice of words should give an instant visual message to the viewer. Written codes

Audio codes Audio codes are also very simple to understand. It is the sounds that are put into a scene to create the mood or atmosphere for the audience. It is not only the songs they choose for the soundtrack but also the sound effects they add in. Audio codes

Technical codes This is where things get a bit complicated. Technical codes relate to all sorts of things: from angles to camera movement, as well as lighting, shutter speeds and type of film used. These are all the technical elements that make up the film. Technical codes

We have all heard of camera angles We have all heard of camera angles. This is where the camera is placed in relation to what is being framed [in the view of the camera] Look at the following angles and try them on your camera, use your phone or one I have given you. On your sheet, write the angle and the effect it gives. E.G. A low camera angle gives the feeling of power or that the person is taller. Camera Angles

Shot sizes We also have different sizes of shots. You can combine angles and shot sizes to create a heap of different effects. Simply look at each shot size, again, try it on your camera and write about what feeling it gives the viewer. Shot sizes

The camera will also move sometimes in order to show parts outside the original frame. Normally you would tilt the camera up and down to show that they are checking the person out. You may pan across to make sure the viewer can see the whole setting. Look at the shots to become familiar with them and in your head decide what affect using it could have on the viewer.
