RtI and it’s implications on music classes at the elementary level Katie Bush

What is RtI? Response to Intervention General Education initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education Special Education Office, written into federal law in the 2004 renewal of IDEA to IDEIA Multi-tiered instruction (usually 3) Tiers 2 and 3 - targeted small group instruction Same model also used for behavior intervention

How does it affect my class? Pullouts from special area classes Pullouts from non-tested classroom areas: Science, Social Science, Calendar Loss of instruction time MAP testing

What do I want to know? If the growth from the interventions merits the loss of learning in other subject areas

What I am going to do- Part I Survey I will survey music teachers and administrators in Lake County, Illinois. Questions to include: Grades taught Frequency of music class Where pullout services occur in the day Driving factors for the schedule

Part II Collect data Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Computer based test that adapts to the student’s answers Students are tested 2-3 times yearly Compare data from fall and spring tests

Part III Journal Anecdotal references from students concerning missing music class due to pullout services Answers coded and tabulated for frequency

Data Analysis Survey-descriptive statistics MAP test data- Effect size using Cohen’s d Journal-descriptive statistics and frequency counts

Questions Thoughts?
