UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY AREA OF STUDY 2 LIFESPAN DEVELOPMENT

INTERACTION OF HEREDITARY AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS IN SHAPING PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT HEREDITY = the transmission of characteristics from biological parents to their offspring via genes at the time of conception ENVIRONMENT = all the experiences, objects and events to which we are exposed throughout our entire lifetime

INTERACTION OF HEREDITARY AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS IN SHAPING PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT NATURE VS NURTURE

HOMEWORK Learning Activity 4.9 (pg.158) Prepare debate by reading appropriate articles or journals provided in class HOMEWORK

THE ENVIRONMENT IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT IN INFLUENCING PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT THAN THE TRANSMISSION OF GENES CLASSROOM DEBATE

ROLE OF MATURATION IN DEVELOPMENT Maturation = the orderly and sequential developmental changes which occur in the nervous system and other bodily structures controlled by our genes EG: Speaking First, our sounds are unrecognisable noise We then say individual words We then string these words into a sentence Our brain must have developed to a point to allow us to do this

ROLE OF MATURATION IN DEVELOPMENT Our physical development lays the foundation for the onset of many aspects of psychological development PRINCIPLE OF READINESS Unless the necessary body structures needed to perform a behaviour are sufficiently mature, then no amount of practice will produce the behaviour

SENSITIVE PERIODS IN DEVELOPMENT PERIODS OF RAPID CHANGE WHEN INDIVIDUALS SEEM TO BE MORE VULNERABLE TO INFLUENCES FROM THEIR ENVIRONMENT

Learning Activity 4.12 (pg.163) HOMEWORK
