Writing an introduction Establish the context – Progressive Era (Use Weebly page) Explain what the Progressive Era was / when it occurred. Explain what writers during that time period did (generally) / prompt idea Introduce writer – Who was Jane Addams? Thesis Statement author (who?) + text (which?) + focus (what?) + purpose (why?) In her book Twenty Years at Hull House, Jane Addams describes the services offered by Hull House to show how settlement houses served the community.

Body Paragraph Topic Sentence Connect the thesis statement/claim The Hull House provided a variety of educational and social services to the people of the neighborhood. Supporting Paragraph (use pdf of text) 4-5 sentences Use examples from the text to “show” the points in your topic sentence. Children and adults benefitted from the programs. School-age children were given opportunities for “initiative and independent social relationships” that they “would not have in the crowed public schools.” Settlement houses provided many educational programs. Classes in sewing, handicraft, and manual training were offered to boys and girls. The Hull House’s “first organized undertaking was a kindergarten.”

Concluding Paragraph Proofread your writing and submit to Haiku. Restate your thesis/claim Recap your examples Closing – how did the Progressive Era writers impact society? Go back to the prompt. Proofread your writing and submit to Haiku.
