The Rhetorical Triangle

Ethos What makes you think you can trust this author? Do their experiences and profession add to trustworthiness and credibility? Is their language appropriate/sophisticated? Imply education? Do they voice their viewpoints respectfully? Do their comments or arguments seem fair? Are their arguments backed up with real life experiences, statistics, research from valid sources? Do they note the validity of some points of the opposing argument? How do they bond with the audience: do they share moral values, experiences, age, gender?

Ethos: Example

Pathos How does the author “move” the audience by playing on their emotions? Do they use emotionally charged words? Images? Metaphors and similes? Experiences and stories? What common values, emotions, and “heartstrings” do they tug at? How do they cause us to feel anger, love, sadness, disgust, fear, etc?

Pathos: Example

Logos Are the arguments the author makes logical and reasonable in relationship to the topic? Are their facts and comments based in reality and related to credible facts, statistics? Does what they say make sense to you concerning what you know about the situation itself, people, and the world in general? Does the author accept and admit the fact that there are logical reasonings and facts that are in opposition to their beliefs?
