Bell Work 11-28-12-9 Ms. Holmes English III

Monday, November 28 Take these notes down in your notebook: Pronouns should be consistent in person and number. Now, in the following short passage, notice the shifts in pronouns: A student should keep a pen in hand while reading. If you take notes, underline important words or passages, and use symbols in margins, a student can remember the key points of their reading. If you use third person, remember that third person plural is usually best, in order to avoid pronoun problems later. first person singular I second person singular you third person singular he, she, it first person plural we second person plural third person plural they

Tuesday, November 29 Revise the following sentences so that the pronouns are all the same: Jan said that she’d be late and don’t wait up for me. People in this town know that you should not be out alone after dark. Any student can be successful if they put forth enough effort.

Wednesday, November 30 Get the following notes down: Another problem with pronoun consistency may arise with relative clauses beginning with “which.” Incorrect: We found a locked chest in the basement, which made us shout with excitement. (Although logically we know that it was finding the locked chest that caused the excitement, the sentence’s grammatical structure indicates that the basement made us shout with excitement.) Correct: “Finding the locked chest in the basement made us shout for joy.” OR “When we found a locked chest in the basement, we shouted with excitement.” If you want to retain the “which,” we should ensure that it relates back to the noun preceding it. Ex. “We found a locked chest in the basement, a discovery which made us shout with excitement.

Thursday, December 1 Free Write 2 paragraphs!

Friday, December 2 Revise the following sentences to eliminate the broad-reference “which.” Hemingway’s trademark is to use short sentences, which makes his style the antithesis of Faulkner’s. All of my money was spent on graduate school, which depressed me. He hated classical music, which made him incompatible with Rhonda.
