Roman Rule In 63BCE, the Romans invaded Palestine. Palestine was an important area for the Romans. It was split into three different provinces. In order to rule their lands effectively, the Romans appointed a governor in each province. Why do you think Palestine has a strategic position even though it was a small country? It was on the edge of the Roman Empire, at the cross-roads of the continents, Europe, Africa and Asia. Whoever had control of Palestine the major trade routes in and out of these areas.

Roman Rule At the time of Jesus, Pontius Pilate ruled over Judea and Samaria. Galilee was governed by Herod Antipas. The Herod Family were the ruling dynasty in Palestine at the time of Jesus.

Religion Romans worshipped many different Gods, whereas the Jews worshipped only one. The Romans did not understand how important their religion was to the Jewish people. They did not understand their religious customs such as not working on the Sabbath and this caused tension.

Foreign Rule The Jews wanted to rule themselves. They felt they oppressed by Roman Rule. They had suffered a long history of hardship under foreign rule.

Tax Collection The Romans imposed heavy taxes on the Jewish people in order to fund building projects and increase wealth and military power.

Tax Collectors The Romans employed local people as tax collectors to collect this money and the Jewish people and tax collectors did not get along. They were allowed to keep a portion of the money they collected.
