Presentation transcript:

Mixture – physical blend of two or more substances Homogenous Heterogenous

Heterogeneous mixture – components are not distributed evenly Homogenous mixture – components are not distributed evenly

Homogenous mixtures Also called “solutions” Composed of solutes and solvents Solute – portion in least quantity, seems to lose identity Solvent – portion in highest quantity, seems to retain identity

Heterogeneous mixtures Will be able to see multiple phases. Phase – any part of a sample with uniform composition and properties

How would we separate mixtures?

1. Manual Sorting Separate by color, shape, texture, etc.

2. Filtration Separates based on size Separates solids from liquids

3. Magnetism Separating a magnetic substance from a nonmagnetic substance

4. Chromatography Separation based on solubility

5. Centrifugation separates the layers based on density

6. Distillation Can be used to remove impurities from water. Separation based on different boiling points Can be used to remove impurities from water.

What are the substances that make up mixtures? – Elements and compounds!

ATOMS ELEMENTS MOLECULES or make up

ATOMS ELEMENTS COMPOUNDS -smallest building block -make up all matter make up ELEMENTS COMPOUNDS -an atom or collection of atoms that are the same -may be chemically linked -1 particle made of 2 or more atoms -chemically linked in a fixed proportion or or

Water → Hydrogen + Oxygen Compounds can be broken down into simpler substances, but elements cannot. Sugar → Carbon + Water Water → Hydrogen + Oxygen

Carbonated water is a homogenous mixture Carbonated water is a homogenous mixture. The solute is carbon dioxide and the solvent is water. It has one phase. All homogenous mixtures only have one phase. The solvent could be separated by distillation.
