Breakdown of Mitosis. M.
Cell Division Mitosis. Chromosomes  Eukaryotes  Found in the nucleus  Contain most of the genes  Made up of two sister chromatids, joined by a centromere.
Cell Division. Chromosomes  Are made of DNA  Each chromosome consists of sister chromatids attached at a centromere.

Cell Division. Why? Cells divide for many reasons: – In order to stay small Diffusion occurs at a faster, more efficient rate in smaller cells. – DNA.

Presentation transcript:

First Foldable: The Cell Cycle Page 41 in your notebook

Flap 1: Gap 1 (G1) - First stage of the cell cycle - Cell carries out normal functions - Cell increases in size, organelles increase in numbers

Flap 2: Synthesis (s) - Second stage of the cell cycle - The cell makes an identical copy of the DNA in the nucleus

Flap 3: Gap 2 (G2) - Third stage of the cell cycle - Additional growth occurs - Cell goes through a critical checkpoint to make sure everything is in order

Flap 4: Mitosis - Final stage of cell cycle - Division of the cell to create two identical daughter cells - Ends with cytokinesis, the division of the cell cytoplasm

Second Foldable: Mitosis Page 42 in your notebook

Flap 1: Prophase - DNA and proteins condense into chromosomes - The nucleus begins to break down - Centrioles move to opposite poles - Spindle fibers form

Flap 2: Metaphase - Spindle fibers attach to each chromosome - Chromosomes line up along the middle of the cell

Flap 3: Anaphase - Chromatids (halves of the chromosomes) separate and move to opposite side of the cell

Flap 4: Telophase - Two new nuclear membranes form - Chromosomes begin to uncoil - Spindle fibers fall apart - Cytokinesis occurs, dividing the cytoplasm between the two daughter cells
