What is a film trailer? What is a film trailer? From your general knowledge as a movie-goer, work with a partner to make a list of all the features you would expect to see and hear in a film trailer. What information should a trailer convey and how might it do this? Think about both images and the words on screen as well as music and dialogue. What would you NOT expect to see in a film trailer?

FILM TRAILER ANALYSIS Each of you has one job to do while we watch the trailers. You will focus on ONLY that one job as you think about how the film portrays a dystopian world. Make brief notes on your graphic organizer while watching. Be prepared to share with the class.

JOBS Light and Color (What color symbolism is revealed in the film? What mood is set?) Music and other sound effects (What kind of music is used? What role does the music and sound effects play?) Themes (What are the major issues that the characters seem to be dealing with? What human struggle is presented?) Pacing (How is the trailer paced: fast, medium, slow? What impact might pacing have?) Narrative Structure (Does the trailer portray mainly action or is it more centered around the characters and their issues? What does this tell you about the kind of movie the trailer advertises?)

Discussion What did we notice: What are some common elements of the dystopian genre? What appears to be the universal struggle for dystopian characters? What themes are prevalent in the genre?
