Depression Impact on Families Evictions, homelessness and tent cities The government believed relief should be given at municipal level Vouchers were given that could be exchanged for food, utilities and rent (called “The Pogey”) Native peoples were expected to “live off the land”

Why Did the Regina Riot Occur? Relief Camps Single people couldn’t get relief Many single men wandered around looking for work 1932: Relief Camps – you had to be single, unemployed and homeless

Why Did the Regina Riot Occur? Men had to give up the right to vote when they joined the camps The camps were in remote areas to keep the men away from the cities to prevent striking Little pay, cold, crowded, manual labour

Why Did the Regina Riot Occur? The “On-To-Ottawa Trek” What are these men doing? Why?

The “On-To-Ottawa Trek” 1935 They are stopped in Regina, Saskatchewan by the government and only a few are allowed to go on to Ottawa Bennett called their leader a “revolutionary criminal” and the trekkers returned to Regina empty handed…and angry… Arthur “Slim” Evans leader of the On-To-Ottawa Trek

The Regina Riot, July 1st 1935 Why Did the Regina Riot Occur? The trekkers meet in the market square where the RCMP surround them waiting to make arrests When the officers begin closing in on the workers, a riot begins An officer is killed and many others injured or arrested

The On-To-Ottawa Trek is over but… The government shuts down relief camps within a year and Bennett loses the 1935 election to Mackenzie-King
