10/7/13 World History Agenda Africa test review! HW: Study for Africa Test on Wed.

Africa Test Review Groups take turns answering questions. You have 30 seconds to answer or you pass. If you get answer right, you earn points. If you get answer wrong or pass, you lose points. If a group gets answer wrong, the next group has a chance to answer. They may pass with no penalty. If you are talking during another group’s turn, your group will lose points. FINAL ROUND: 1 question. Groups wager amount of points (like Jeopardy). Group with the most points at the end of the game wins!

Question: What does the term colonialism mean?

Answer: Control by one power over another group of people or territory.

Question: What country was King Leopold II the ruler of?

Answer: King Leopold II was the ruler of Belgium.

Question: What part of Africa did the Belgians colonize?

Answer: The Belgians colonized the Congo.

Question: Who was Menelik II?

Answer: Menelik II was the emperor of Ethiopia when they fought against the Italians.

Question: What is a cash crop?

Answer: Cash crops are grown solely for the purpose of selling the product to make profit, NOT for consumption by its owner.

Question: What are two effects that cash crops had on the Africans?

Possible answers: Africans couldn’t grow their own food. This led to famines. Men forced to leave to find other ways to support their families.

Question: This is the policy of colonization where Africans were given limited self-rule.

Answer: Indirect Control. (Africans were put in charge of governing themselves.)

Question: Explain what happened at the Maji Maji Rebellion in German East Africa. What was one result of the rebellion?

Answer: Africans sprinkled magic water on themselves thinking it would turn German bullets to water. When Germans attacked, Africans were mowed down by the thousands. Africans lost, but Germans did enact reforms to make colonialism more acceptable to the Africans.

Answer: European powers decided how they were going to divide up Africa amongst themselves.

Question: What was the major source of wealth that Europeans found in colonizing Africa?

Answer: Raw materials for European industrialization.

Answer: Assimilation – policy that local populations would adopt the colonizing country’s culture and language and become like them

Answer: He played European powers against each other and built up a stockpile of weapons.

Final Round!! Each group must decide how many points they are going to wager. If you get answer correct, you win that many points. If you get answer wrong, you lose that many points. Groups must write their answers down in the time given.
