Plant and Animal Cells Go over basic needs with prompt: What do all living things need to survive? Now lets see how plant and animal cells live and how they get work together as a team of organelles to survive!

Plant Cell 1 10 11 2 8 12 6 These are called organelles (like organs) of the cell, they are the working components that keep the cell alive. Lets see how the different parts of the cell work and how the plant cell compares to an animal cell. 3 4 5 7 9 Ribosomes

Cell Wall “brick wall” Outer Barrier Protection Maintain shape Made of cellulose The cell wall is the outer barrier of the cell and provides support for the shape of the cell The cell wall helps the cell keep its shape by allowing water to get in and escape so that it doesn’t shrink up or burst. Though the cell wall is strong, it is also flexible. Cellulose is also found in wood and paper

Animal Cell 3 Nucleolus 5 4 6 10 7 Nucleus is also surrounded by a membrane for protection! 2 8 1 9

Cell Membrane -The “Doorman” -Protects and encloses cell. Na+ -The “Doorman” -Protects and encloses cell. -Controls which materials enter and leave the cell. K+ Cell membrane acts as a barrier which only allows certain things to enter and exit the cell. Depending on what environment the cell is in, it may need more water in the cell, or more sodium, the cell membrane allows these materials to enter or exit. The membrane is made of fats and proteins. The fats bind together and keep the structure in tact and the proteins are the spaces which allow materials to enter or exit. They are found in Cl-

Cytoplasm “jell-o filling” Jelly-like fluid Fills most of inner cell - Organelles are scattered throughout the cytoplasm Gel- like fluid that fills most of the inside of the cell Holds the organelles in place and provides area for materials to be transported

Nuclear Membrane “secret service” Protects nucleus Only lets the very most important things in Located inside the nucleus Makes ribosomes which aid in DNA replication and cell reproduction.

Nucleus “Brain” or “Control Room” Controls everything that goes on it the cell! - Holds Chromosomes/DNA Information to make new cells Makes ribosomes The nucleus works and controls all actions of the cell and cells activity, considered the brain of the cell. Chromosomes- DNA, genes DNA holds the information in its genetic code to be able to reproduce and direct the cells activities. What protects the nucleus? The nuclear membrane!! In animal and plant cells!

Mitochondria Cell Powerhouse Makes energy for the cell “Mighty Mitochondria” Cell Powerhouse Makes energy for the cell Converts cellular “food” into chemicals that the cell can use to carry out its activities such as cell growth, internal signaling to carry out processes and cell reproduction . Sometimes called the cells “powerhouse”. Makes ATP which is the chemical energy that cells use to carry out reproduction and other activities. Found in both plant and animal cells. O2  ATP (Chemical Energy)

PHOTOSYNTHESIS Chloroplast Where energy is made for the plant cells Chloroplast makes the “food” to keep the cell functioning through photosynthesis- which is basically converting sunlight, water and CO2 into sugar that the plants use for food. Sometimes considered the “chef” of the cell. This organelle is only found in PLANT CELLS! Why?

Endoplasmic Reticulum and Ribosomes Rough -”ER” -Connected to the outside of the nucleus. -Rough ER has attached ribosomes! - Used for transport! Ribosomes: “ribs” Makes, stores and transports materials throughout the cell! They also make proteins! Smooth Ribosomes Produce Proteins and lipids. Internal delivery system- Ribosomes can attach and detach to travel around the cell and deliver messages. They play a big part in DNA replication and when making proteins and fats. Found in BOTH plant and animal cells!

Golgi Bodies Like the “POST OFFICE” Package products from the ER and send to different parts of the cell! I try to remember that in order to send packages all around the country, we need a lot of people to be helping and working. Well, the word bodies reminds me that we need a lot of bodies to package and send all these messages to other parts of the cell to keep it working! They are found in both Animal and plant cells!

Vacuole Storage “Vacuum” -Fluid Filled Animal Cell Plant Cell Used for storing materials the cell may need to carry out its processes, plant cells typically only have one large vacuole that takes up a lot of the space in the cell, where as animal cells have many small vacuoles through out the cell body. Like a vacuum that sucks everything up and stores it until you empty it.

Lysosome “Lysol” Contains enzymes to break down waste products. Dump truck “Lysol” Contains enzymes to break down waste products. Found in animals and SOME plants Stomach Contain an enzyme called hydrolase which kills and breaks down cellular waste products. Digests or breaks down materials that the cell no longer needs. Like a stomach would do for us, and like a dumpster does for the city’s trash. These are found randomly in plant and animal cells.

What are the main differences? Plant Cell Animal Cell Plant and animal cells are different in many ways, what are some ways that they are different? They are different in the way that they generate energy. Plant cells use photosynthesis for their energy where as animal cells do not. What organelle in the plant cells are responsible for photosynthesis? Chloroplasts, which are not found in animal cells, this is very important. What do we notice about the size of organelles in the cells? What is the largest organelle in the plant cell? Vacuole! Yes, the size of the vacuole in the cells are very different. This should help you be able to identify which is the plant cell when you are looking at a blank cell diagram! What part do you see in the plant cell but not in the animal cell? Cell wall! Both plant and animal cells have a cell membrane which acts as a barrier of protection. It allows materials to enter or exit the cell and helps maintain its more complex lifestyle! However, the plant cell have a cell wall as well, which maintains the square shape of the cell and also produces cellulose to hold together structurally. What are the main differences? Cell Wall vs. Membrane Energy Size of Vacuole Chloroplasts
