The Dimensions of Health and Wellness

How do you define health? “Healthy” is a word thrown around everyday, ALL THE TIME! But what does ‘health’ really mean?

Health (noun): A state of well-being not described purely by the presence or absence of disease.

What is Wellness? *Wellness is a balance of physical, emotional, intellectual and social health. Your well-being is your state of health and wellness. How do you feel currently, are you positive, do you enjoy life, do you have a sense of purpose? Social Emotional Intellectual Physical

What is Health Education versus Health Literacy? Health Education: Being able to provide information to people in order to help promote health and prevent disease. Health Literacy: the ability to locate, interpret and apply information pertaining to your health. You build and use what you have learned.

Physical Health: How well your body functions. Physical Activity Exercise Sports Hygiene Presence or absence of disease Sleep

Intellectual Health: involves your ability to think clearly and critically and solve problems. Enjoy exploring new ideas Face problems and challenges Adapt and learn Growing as a person Positive attitudes Optimistic

Can One Area of Wellness Affect Another? 1- Sue didn’t like the way she was looking in her clothes so she so she stopped eating as much as she could. 2- Sam got into a fight with his brother this morning and is now having a hard time concentrating in math class. 3- Mary is feeling overwhelmed by all her school work so she’s stopped spending time with her friends. 4- Pat doesn’t get enough sleep during the week and as a result is always dozing off in his 9th period class.

Why do we want to be healthy? Improved concentration and thinking abilities More productive Better quality of life To be HAPPIER! ?

Health and Wellness Baseball Directions: Everyone begins standing. After each statement is read, remain standing if the statement is true. If it is false, sit down and then stand back up- this is a strike! 3 strikes, and you’re out! When you’re out, you are to remain sitting.

THINK ABOUT IT!! Factors affecting health Income and social status Education Physical environment Social support networks Genetics Health Services Gender What else can affect someone’s health status?

Activity In Groups of 4 you will circulate around the room to the different stations and read the article. While reading the article identify with your group the different characteristics, behaviors or elements of physical, emotional, social and intellectual health you find. You will have 4 minutes at each station a timer will go off when you are ready to move.

Exit Ticket Journal: Create your own functional definition of health and a separate definition for wellness.

Activity: Wellness Wheel Evaluate your current health standing in each dimension of health. HOLD ONTO THIS WELLNESS WHEEL! It will be a part of your final exam.
