Presentation transcript:

“The Raven” One of the most famous poems ever written First published in 1845 in a New York newspaper Poe became extremely popular through this widely acclaimed poem; however, he only received approx. ten dollars for his work. Poe uses different literary devices to try and create a songlike rhythm to this work Poe wanted to create a melancholy poem that would create dread in the reader, which is why he chose to base this poem around the death of a loved one.

Literary Devices in “The Raven” Alliteration – the repetition of consonant sounds, usually at the beginning of words. Ex: While I nodded, nearly napping… Internal Rhyme – Rhyme that occurs within lines Ex: I went to town to buy a gown/ I took the car and it wasn’t far Assonance – two or more words close to one another repeat the same vowel sound and tend to start with different consonant sounds.
