American Government March 29th Objective Opener (pg 104) Demonstrate knowledge of the US Supreme court system by preparing a case as a petitioner or a respondent. Channel 1

Case Briefs (write yours pg 104) Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier (1988): student expression in a school newspaper Wallace v. Jaffree (1985): prayer in schools. Bethel School District No. 403 v Fraser (1986): ‘inappropriate’ Speech in schools. Board of Education of Westside Community Schools v. Mergens (1990): Religious Clubs

Preparing your Case: Write your assigned case and role in your notebook! (p104) Assign Roles: Chief Counsel (must have at least 80% in class to qualify for this role) will be responsible for the overall quality of your argument. They will cover for absent or missing Associate Counsel. Associate Counsel (3)will prepare and deliver the parts of the arguments (opening, main, closing)

How to Prepare Review your case! Read it, know it, use it. Follow the Steps on your handout!!!!! Consider the precedents (earlier cases) Petitioners/Respondents: Prepare opening statement, closing statement, main arguments. Anticipate the other side’s arguments, and prepare on how to counter them! Create a Name Plate for your Name and side (Petitioner or Respondent)

Proceedings Each case will have the floor NEXT time. (15 min each case) While the Petitioners and Respondents are doing their case, everyone else is still going to be participating: 9 Justices: you must ask one question during the proceedings, Petitioners, Respondents, Media: You will watch the case and write a short article about the proceedings and results. Court clerks: you will take notes of the proceedings, including the main arguments and Judge’s questions.
