Literary Analysis Essay Goal: to persuade your audience to interpret a story in the same way you do. How to reach your goal: Give strong quotes and examples from the book along with clear interpretation to guide your audience to interpret the story in the same way you do.

Tips Assume your audience has read the story– no need for lots of background info. Have a clearly stated thesis that you refer to consistently throughout the paper. Have clearly stated and proven claims in each body paragraph. These claims should support your thesis.

Creating Claims and a Thesis Statement Start by writing your topic down and writing down all the reasons you’re right Next, break your best reasons down into 2 categories– these categories will become your claims. Write your thesis statement based off of your claims. Creating Claims and a Thesis Statement

Thesis Statements Must be specific Do NOT say: Incarnate and St. Joe’s are similar in some ways but different in others. DO say: Although Incarnate and St. Joe’s are both all girls’ schools in St. Louis, they are distinct in their approaches to education, their schedules, and the make up of their student body. Thesis Statements
