Algebra Review “Solving Equations” September 20th 2010

Balancing the Equation… Inverse Operations… To solve algebraic equations, we use inverse operations. To get the variable by itself, we do the opposite. Ex: subtraction gets rid of addition multiplication gets rid of division Balancing the Equation… Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other

One-Step Equations 3x = 12 x – 5 = 2 x/2 = 6 1 + x = 4

Two-Step Equations 2x – 1 = 11 5 – 3x = 20

Multi-Step Equations 4( x – 1 ) = 20 2 ( 3x + 2 ) + 5 = 21

Equations w/ Variable on Both Sides 3x – 6 = 5x + 8 7x + 10 = x - 2

Solving Ratios

CLASSWORK 1) 7x = 35 8) 3( x – 2) = 3 2) x – 7 = 11 9) 12x -1 = 143 7) 14)
