Bell ringer: Study for Chapter 5, Section 1 Quiz

1492 Christopher Columbus lands in the Caribbean. Spain begins to make use of the region’s resources. This starts global trade.

Goods were exchanged in what would be called the triangular trade route (trade among 3 continents: the Americas, Europe, and Africa). This exchange of good and ideas became known as the Columbian Exchange. 1500’s

1780’s Europe had colonized nearly all of Central America.

1804 Haiti is the leading producer of sugarcane. By 1791, slaves far outnumbered white planters. Toussaint L’Ouverture began a movement for independence. Haiti won revolution and became independent in 1804.

1898 United States wins the Spanish American War. Cuba and Puerto Rico (which had been under Spanish rule since the 1500’s became under U.S. rule).

1917 Puerto Ricans granted U.S. citizenship

1952 Puerto Rico becomes a U.S. common wealth, a nation that governs itself, but is part of a larger country.

1959 Fidel Castro overthrew Cuba’s dictator and established Communism in Cuba. Until the early 1990’s, the government controlled all aspects of the economy.
