Warm Up – Name a Special Purpose government. GA Milestones Review – State and describe how James Oglethorpe fortified the colony of Georgia to defend against the Spanish and hostile natives.

Special Purpose Governments

Special Purpose Districts Created for a specific job or task Within certain guidelines, these districts are self-governing Examples school districts MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) Public Housing Authority Georgia Ports Authority

Examples of Special-Purpose Governments Cobb County School District – receives funding from County collection of School taxes (part of property tax), the state of Georgia (QBE), and some funding from the Federal government (some schools get more or less depending on if Title I school, etc.)

Examples of Special-Purpose Governments Whatever these special-purpose governments are called, they exist to provide for the public’s welfare

Role of Local Governments Working with State Agencies to Administer State Programs Cobb County School District – work with the State Department of Education to administer state policies and standards; work with the PSC to ensure teachers and other staff are certified or qualified to work with students

Role of Local Governments Working with State Agencies to Administer State Programs Department of Transportation – grants/funding to repair roads, install lights, signs, etc. that state requires Department of Water – water treatment plant must meet state and federal guidelines Department of Motor Vehicle – vehicle registration, emission test verification, licensing, etc.
