A System of Profound Knowledge Appreciation for a system Knowledge about variation Theory of Knowledge Psychology of people From The New Economics, Deming Dr. Deming proposed “A System of Profound Knowledge” in his book The New Economics. Most readers familiar with “Out of the Crisis” will understand the call for “knowledge about variation” and the use of statistics and control charts. Dr. Deming moved beyond the numbers with The New Economics, and reached into psychology (we are working with people in this endeavor). Dr. Deming brought in ideas from Peter Senge (The Fifth Discipline) and Dr. Russ Ackoff on systems thinking. More on systems thinking with the next slide. Finally, we have the “Theory of Knowledge” which gets into the question of “how do we know what we know”. Much of this was influenced by CI Lewis and “Mind and the World Order” of 1929. The W. Edwards Deming Institute® is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1993 by noted consultant Dr. W. Edwards Deming. The aim of the Institute is to foster understanding of The Deming System of Profound Knowledge™ to advance commerce, prosperity and peace.

Appreciation for a System – Deming Quotes “94% of the outcome of any organization comes from the processes used, not the people”.  “A fault in the interpretation of observations, seen everywhere, is to suppose that every event is attributable to someone (usually the one closest at hand), or is related to some special event. The fact is that most troubles with service and production lie in the system and not the people”.

Analysis vs Synthesis Analysis has been the essence of classical science. The scientific method assumes that the whole is nothing but the sum of the parts, and thus understanding the structure is both necessary and sufficient to understanding the whole. Synthesis has been the main instrument of the functional approach. Systems Thinking Visualization Would putting a Rolls-Royce engine in a Geo Metro make an improved automobile? Nothing wrong with either, but the combination probably won’t work (Russ Ackoff) Dr. Russ Ackoff tells a story about creation of the “best possible automobile”. If we gather one of every make and model of car available, and strip off the various “best” parts – the best frame, the best battery, the best engine, the best transmission – and collect these parts in a pile and then attempt to make the “best possible automobile”, we won’t even have an operable car as none of the parts were designed to fit together, to work together. We often build our corporate organizations in the same manner.

Predictions Engineers often predict accidents. Their predictions are uncanny for correctness in detail. They fail in only one way – they can not predict exactly when the accident will happen. - Dr. Deming, Out of the Crisis page 479 Calculations after the fact, using only data available prior to the disaster, showed there was greater than a 10% chance of the Challenger explosion occurring, given the pre-launch temperatures and prior history of O-ring burn through.
