Common Core Standards: RL.11-12.1, RL.11-12.7 and SL.11-12.1 Thursday, May 9th, 2019 Common Core Standards: RL.11-12.1, RL.11-12.7 and SL.11-12.1 Aim: How can we compare and contrast the film version to the original text of Fences? Objective: Students will analyze the film of Fences and identify comparisons and contrasts to the original text. Do Now: Choose one of the following questions. 1.) Is the film captivating? Explain. OR 2.) Why do you think the director Denzel Washington decided to make the film version (2016) of a play written in 1985? *Show any owed HW.

Objective:: Students will analyze the film of Fences and identify comparisons and contrasts to the original text. Agenda A.) Do Now: Answer the Do Now. Turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will prepare to share their tablemates’ answers with the whole class. B.) Discuss/Share: -Captains will share Do Now answers. C.) Film Viewing: As you’re viewing the film, identify comparisons and contrasts between the film and the original text. Finish filling in the film review handout. Should this play be taught in high school? Review answers to the film handout. D.) Q & A/Reflections: Are you satisfied with the director’s film version of the play?

Comprehension Check: How well you understand the tasks today: Analysis of comparisons and contrasts between the film and the original text of the play. Identify universal messages of the American Dream and the symbolism of fences in Wilson’s play, Fences SELF-ASSESS: How easy/ difficult was that task?
