People power to transform Europe www.WeMove.EU, info@WeMove.EU 21.11.2015 People power to transform Europe 1

Why do we campaign at EU level? www.WeMove.EU, info@WeMove.EU 21.11.2015 Sense of belonging to a European ‘demos’ is limited Feeling of no real European debate or conversation Distance from EU Most organised civil society mobilise at national level Far right, nationalist, Eurosceptic political groups on the rise EU level decision making requires transnational mobilisation But Europeans speak many languages 2

Why digital engagement matters www.WeMove.EU, info@WeMove.EU 21.11.2015 We use online tools to lower barriers to participation Democracy can be more than just voting: there are other channels Online campaigning allows a new form of engagement Can mobilise a bigger group than offline and at global scale Allows millions from multiple countries to act together in hours in their own language and on a scale and speed that wouldn’t happen otherwise Can connect activists everywhere for joint effort to shape EU decisions Facilitates direct communication over time Can test what resonates with people Can share evidence of ‘more in common’ in Europe Theory of change based on consistent noise and pressure But online tools seldom work alone! 3

Digital actions - petitions www.WeMove.EU, info@WeMove.EU 21.11.2015 Our members came together to defend spanish firemen that were volunteers on boat in greece and were wrongly accused to smuggle syrian refugees because they rescued them. We were able to have on fireman come to brussels to deliver our petition to a commissioner... On 7 May 2018, Greece tried them for rescuing people from drowning. They could have faced a sentence of 10 years of imprisonment, but thankfully they were acquitted of all charges by the court.   Stop Criminalising Humanity! 4

Digital actions to support non-digital actions www.WeMove.EU, info@WeMove.EU 21.11.2015 This one went further than "simply" a solidarity message, we asked our members to give money to women grassroot movements (gals for gals) so they could continue the fight and we raised more than 13k from from hundreds of members all around Europe. The broader "black monday" campaign was seen as the birth of a social movement, with tons of PL women demonstrating for the first time, and learning that they can win.

www.WeMove.EU, info@WeMove.EU 21.11.2015 ECI Engagement Stop glyphosate! Glyphosate campaign: a good example of a complex one spread over several years with lots of separate actions, with a first petition in 2015, one against the merger montsanto bayer and of course the ECI. Across these campaigns, we sent 12 million emails, received more than 1 million signatures on our petitions + the ECI ones,  got thousands of people collecting signatures on paper in their home, markets or offices, big delivery actions... 04.02.2017 10
