Avoid band 4 with comparison throughout 1st paragraph – language in the 1st poem. 2nd paragraph – language in the 2nd poem with comparisons to the first throughout 3rd paragraph – structure in both (compare!) 4th paragraph – themes / ideas in both (compare!) Basically, every point you make should be linked to the other poem with at least a comparative phrase.

Comparative phrases Things are similar: Things are different: Whereas Instead of Alternatively However Unlike On the other hand In contrast Equally In the same way Similarly Likewise As with This is also seen in

Band 5 analysis  Band 6 evaluation Analyse using phrases like: This suggests… This makes the reader think… The word ______ implies… The technique _____ has the effect of… This demonstrates… This reveals… Add evaluation to your analysis: This technique is effective because… This challenges the reader by… This is interesting because… This word is particularly powerful because…

PLAN IT! Read the poems with the question in mind: Pick 1 excellent quote from each to dissect for language – underline this in each poem and note the techniques (easiest: sibilant or plosive?) Structure? Consider punctuation in the line you’ve chosen (easiest: end-stopped or enjambment?). Arrangement of stanzas? Rhyme scheme? Link to the question Themes / ideas – which words/techniques reveal this? Link to the question

Plan these: Compare how poets present ideas about nature in Hour + one other Compare how poets present ideas about death in To His Coy Mistress + one other Compare how poets present ideas about getting older in Nettles + one other

Unseen – section B Mark Band 6 16-18 marks In response to the task, students demonstrate:   6.1 insightful exploratory response to ideas/themes 6.2 close analysis of detail to support interpretation 6.3 evaluation of writer’s uses of language and/or structure and/or form and effects on readers Mark Band 5 13-15 marks 5.1 exploratory response to ideas/themes 5.2 analytical use of detail 5.3 analysis of writer’s uses of language and/or structure and/or form and effects on readers Mark Band 4 10-12 marks 4.1 considered/qualified response to ideas/themes 4.2 details linked to interpretation 4.3 appreciation/consideration of writer’s uses of language and/or structure and/or form and effects on readers

PLAN IT! Read the poem with the question in mind – you need 3 strong quotes which can be picked apart: start, middle and end Annotate on the poem – 1. what is the writer’s attitude about the question topic (connotations of words etc) 2. how does the writer reveal this (techniques used + effect) Annotate all 3 quotes with attitude and techniques, then all you need to do is write it up (remember band 5 analysis, band 6 evaluation)

Plan these: (annotate 3 key quotes) Read Handbag. What do you think the poet is saying about her mother? How does she present her ideas? Read Composed upon Westminster Bridge. What are the poet’s feelings about the city? How are these feelings conveyed to the reader? Read Eating Poetry. What is the poet saying about imagination? How does he present these ideas?
