WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE THE OLDEST AND YOUNGEST ROCKS?

In your journal, write where you think you would find the newest rocks.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, rocks are continuously being formed on the ocean floor at Mid-Ocean ridges. These lava pillows were recently formed near the Hawaiian Island They are some of the youngest rocks on the surface of the Earth!

New rocks are also formed on land as lava cools from volcanoes. Lava erupting from the Pu’u ‘O’o vent Kilauea, Hawaii

ON THIS MAP, THE OLDEST ROCKS ARE ORANGE. WHAT PATTERNS DO YOU SEE?

On your map, shade in the youngest rocks in one color, and the newest rocks in a different color.

ON THIS MAP, THE OLDEST ROCKS ARE ORANGE. The Shield rocks range from 570 million years old to 3.5 billion years old and are the oldest rocks on our continents. They have floated on Earth’s mantle for a long time without being subducted back into the mantle.
