Ratios 6.RP.1 Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.

What is a ratio? A ratio is a comparison of two quantities that tells how many of one quantity there are for a certain number of the other quantity.

The 3 ways to write ratios One way is to write the ratio using the word to 2 to 5 A second way is to write the ratio using a colon 2 : 5 A third way is to write the ratio as a fraction 2/5

Part-To-whole compares a part to its whole. Two types of ratios Part-To-part compares one part of a whole to another part of the same whole. Part-To-whole compares a part to its whole.

Example The number of guppies is represented by purple circles and the number of goldfish is represented by orange circles What is the ratio of guppies to goldfish? 6 to 9 , 6/9, 6:9 Can this ratio be reduced? 2 to 3 , 2/3, 2:3 “For every _____ ,there are _____” “For every 2 guppies ,there are 3 goldfish”
