Lesson 1 There are many different ways to pay for something. In today’s society, we use many forms. Turn to page 99 in your Student Anthology. How is today’s money different from that of earlier civilizations? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different ways we pay for things? How does the amount of money you could earn in the United States compare with that of the rest of the world? Ms. Smith! Please tell us about money from South Korea, China, and Thailand!

Lesson 1 In the last Expedition, we learned how writers organize text. What was this kind of organization? Sequential ORDER! In this Expedition, we learn about another way expository texts are organized. Compare and Contrast: What do these two words mean?

Turn to page 100 Let’s read the text so that we can compare and contrast different currencies. We are going to use the Venn Diagram to compare and contrast animals and modern money. Do this with your groups.

Comprehension In early times, how did people get what they needed? What currency did people in China use more than 3,000 years ago? How were Chinese cowries similar to Native American wampum? How are today’s coins similar to some early ones? Do you believe that paper money and coins will one day disappear? Why?
