Team Roles! HW: 1-6 through 1-10 1.1.1 Inputs & Outputs August 16, 2018 Team Roles!

CO: SWBAT use Order of Operations to evaluate expressions using inputs and outputs. LO: SWBAT verbalize their thoughts as they learn to work as an effective team. Objectives

1-2. FUNCTION MACHINES 2: Read problem to team. At the Function Factory, a number is put into the top of a function machine and the machine puts out another number depending on how it is programmed.  In the illustration at right, the worker input a “3” and the machine output an “8”.  This machine is programmed to square the number and subtract 1. A customer brings a box with a mix of integers (..., −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3,…) as inputs to a function machine.  She wants you to program a function machine so that the output is always negative.  Your manager suggests  − 𝑥 2 −10.  Did the manager make a good suggestion?  Are there any inputs that will not meet the customer’s needs?  Explain. 2: Read problem to team. 1: Assign a number to each person to try. Decide together and answer in NB.

2. Read problem to team. Sketch. 1-3. Sometimes two machines at the Function Factory are stacked on top of each other. When a value for x is input into the first machine, an output value comes out.  That output then becomes the input for another machine.  See the diagram at right. Work together with your team to determine the outputs from each of the function machines at right.  Each member on your team should be able to explain.  A customer has ordered a negative number.  What number, if any, could you input into the top of the first machine so that a negative number is output at the bottom of the second machine?  Explain. Limited outputs 2. Read problem to team. Sketch.

1-4. Your team’s job is to put the three machines in order so that one machine’s output becomes the next machine’s input. Suppose that 0 is the input of the first machine, and −31 is the output of the last machine.  Are there any of these function machines that could not possibly be the last machine?  Explain. Are there any of these function machines that could not possibly be first?  Explain. What order will result in a final output of −31 when the initial input is 0?  What order will result in a final output of 36 when the initial input is  1 7 ? Pass out cards. Limited outputs Work through as a team.
