Figure 1 Local fibrogenic cells involved in experimental liver fibrogenesis in rats. The involvement of different local cell populations in rat fibrosis models is shown schematically. During the early steps (solid lines), hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and portal fibroblasts (PFs) are recruited after CCl4 treatment or bile duct ligation (BDL), respectively, resulting in myofibroblasts (MFs). Sirius red staining shows extracellular matrix deposition around portal zones (PZ) after BDL (A), or centrolobular vein (CLV) areas after CCl4 treatment (B). After chronic injury (dotted lines), in both models, fibrogenesis involves both HSCs and PFs. (C) Cytokeratin 19 immunostaining shows the involvement of PZ with a proliferation of bile duct epithelial cells after chronic CCl4 treatment.
